A hotel in Torquay which has featured on a Channel 4 documentary ‘The Hotel’, has been inundated with hits on its website and flooded with booking enquiries. According to Mark Jenkins, the manager of The Grosvenor Hotel, the hotel website now receives around 50,000 hits each day in comparison to the previous 100 per day prior to the C4 documentary.

This development may seem perfectly normal for a hotel which has received some publicity, but the hotel in question is managed in a style which is unique and experiences daily disasters on a scale which is similar to episodes of Fawlty Towers, one of the UK’s best-loved comedy shows. Mr Jenkins was televised in the second episode of the fly on the wall show as saying:

“The only people who stay in Torquay are the ones that aren’t clever enough to find the railway station.”

Following the screening of the first episode, hits on the website increased to around 30,000, and after the second episode the hits reached 55,000. People are rushing to book a stay in the hotel, with 24 wedding inquiries having been made.

Christmas at the hotel was also covered by the cameras, although the hotel has had some setbacks. Following the first episode, some of the wedding rooms had been double booked and the wedding co-ordinator didn’t show up. After this latest disastrous development, one couple actually phoned the hotel and cancelled their wedding.

According to Mark, he doesn’t have any regrets about making the programme, although the Fawlty Towers style manager is about to be interviewed on Spanish radio, and doesn’t speak the language. When the original Fawlty Towers was broadcast in Spain, Manuel (the bumbling waiter from Barcelona) was dubbed as having been from Italy, not Spain – so hopefully Mark won’t spoil the illusion for the Spanish fans of the show.

Terry Jones, one of the creators of the infamous comedy show Monty Python, has recently spoken to Day & Night about being a father again. According to the writer and comedian, he has become acclimatised to being a parent at the age of 69, although he has had to get used to not having as much spare time.

Jones joined forces with Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and John Cleese, who is also well known for other comedy shows like Fawlty Towers. Together they created Monty Python which progressed to a TV series, films, stage shows and a musical. Jones has three children from his previous marriage to Alison Telfer. His current partner is Anna Soderstrom, who is a Swedish graduate aged 29. Together they have a toddler, Siri aged two years old.
When asked about the effect of having another child, Jones states that he has less time for himself as he spends more time with his daughter in the evenings. Although she had a phase of waking and getting into her parent’s bed, she now settles throughout the night. Jones has had to cope with accusations of being selfish for having a child at his age. In response, he said:

“Having a child who’ll be loved, to parents who love each other, is the important thing. I’ve a reasonable chance of living another 20 years and hope I do, so Siri will be in her 20s.”

In addition to being a musician, author, composer, film director and much more, Jones has put his name to myhealthtips.com, a health website.

John Cleese, star and creator of numerous comedy shows and films proved to be the main influence behind a bookseller deciding to write a book called ‘Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops’. Jen Campbell, aged 24 works at Ripping Yarns in Highgate as a bookseller who became fascinated by the strange questions that she is asked on a daily basis.

Campbell began to make a note of the weird and wonderful things that customers would ask her, eventually deciding to write a book after spotting a Tweet by John Cleese. The post on the social networking site said “what is your pet peeve”, to which Campbell replied:

“The weird things people say in bookshops”

The inspiration for this reply came from a customer wanting to know whether Anne Frank, a victim of the Holocaust, had written a sequel to her book. Following this bizarre request, Campbell documented all the weird questions and requests from her customers, eventually being approached by a publisher after some of the sayings were posted on her blog page. Campbell says:

“I love working in bookshops. There’s nothing better than recommending a book to someone and when they come back and say they really enjoyed it. But for some reason, retail generally, and book shops in particular, attract especially strange requests.”

The book may be appreciated by John Cleese, who influenced Campbell with his post on Twitter, especially as he is particularly loved for his off-beat sense of humour displayed in his various comedy shows.

John Cleese is due to travel to Adelaide next month, February 2012, to perform his one man show, An Evening with John Cleese. The star of some of the most respected British comedy shows admits that the format for his show came about completely by accident.

Originally, the UK show was structured, with the performance being scripted. At first, Cleese would go on stage and perform this and that, with a Question and Answer section at the end when he had no ideas left. It turned out that the audience loved seeing Cleese put on the spot.

The audiences of John Cleese turned out to be:

“rather curious and quite nosey”

wanting to discover more about the writer and actor. The casual format has now become a greater feature of his act. Cleese said:

“The audience loved the direct contact with the performer, and anecdotes about things like the hotel that Fawlty Towers was actually based on. I guess they’ve probably seen the show an inordinate number of times and are desperate for something new.”

According to Cleese, writing the episodes of Fawlty Towers gave huge pleasure to himself and his ex wife, Connie Booth. He also says the friendship between the Python members continues on a yearly basis, although sadly, Graham Chapman has died. Although Cleese says that the Python members won’t work together again, they are all still amazed that their previous work continues to captivate and fascinate audience members of all ages.

The reality TV show The Hotel, returned to UK television screens on New Year’s Day, to present the chaotic day to day events from behind the scenes at a real hotel to the nation. The hotel in question, The Grosvenor Hotel, is situated in Torquay, which is where popular comedy series Fawlty Towers was filmed. The manager, Mark Jenkins and his team was followed by cameras all day every day, as the film crew captured the everyday events taking place in a hotel.

The series raised a few concerns for Mark as he wondered whether the presence of cameras and a film crew would affect his customers. However, according to Mark most of the hotel guests were happy about the filming, with any guests not so happy being offered alternative accommodation.

Over the years the English Riviera has strived to shed the image of Fawlty Towers, one of the UKs most loved comedy shows. Unfortunately, the footage which provides the most entertainment for viewers will reveal the bits that go awry. The first episode features a couple who are holding their wedding at the hotel, which is surprisingly similar to Fawlty Towers, with just about everything going wrong. When asked about comparisons to Fawlty Towers and its proprietor Basil Fawlty, Mark says:

“No, not at all, there is one major difference; Basil didn’t like his guests, whereas I do. Well, most of them. And I don’t hit my staff.”

Mark did say that after watching the show his staff may leave him to run the hotel by himself.

According to John Cleese, he was once offered a peerage, but turned it down as it would mean spending winter in the UK. Although Cleese has played a number of upper class Britons, he has no regrets at turning down the offer.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Cleese admitted that he thought the order of chivalry was “silly”, which is why he refused a Commander of the British Empire. Cleese found fame as a member of the Monty Python team, later going on to write and star in Fawlty Towers playing the role of Basil Fawlty in one of the most loved comedy shows of its time, one that always plays at Christmas, along with the usual Doctor Who, James Bond, Superman and murder mystery shows.

The former leader of the Liberal Democrats, Paddy Ashdown now Baron Ashdown approached Cleese in 1999 to offer him a seat in the House of Lords. This was said to be for “political services”, which may have meant his appearances made to represent the party and his financial contributions to the Liberal Democrats. Cleese was asked to be an active legislator but refused as this would have meant remaining in the cold winters of the UK.

In January, Cleese will commence a tour for two months called:

“An evening with the legendary John Cleese”

He has recently finished the tour which he labelled The Alimony Tour, done to earn money to pay his divorce settlement to his third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger. Cleese is currently seeing girlfriend Jennifer Wade, aged 40.

Eric Idle and John Cleese, two of the Monty Python team, have fallen out after Idle refused to pay Cleese a monthly fee for his voice over work in the highly acclaimed play, Spamalot.

The play was written by Idle, based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a 1974 film. All the members of the Python team received royalties from the play, but John Cleese received a weekly fee as he provided the voice of God in the stage production. Eric Idle has used his own voice for the voice of God and has refused to pay any more money to Cleese, citing the reason as him having more than enough money.

In 2005, the musical was debuted on Broadway, receiving a warm reception. The play has now gone on to be staged in the West End. According to an inside source, the relationship between Idle and the other members of the Python team, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin has ‘deteriorated lately’. On the subject of axing Cleese from the musical production, Idle said:

“It wasn’t mean- he’s had millions of dollars from it. He charges people a fortune for using his voice. He’s always been in financial crisis.”

Cleese is currently performing on his Alimony Tour, which was produced to earn money to pay his divorce settlement to his third wife, Alyce Faye Eichelberger. John Cleese met Eric Idle in 1965 at Cambridge University. He has since gone on to create a number of well respected comedy shows in the UK.

John Cleese, co-creator and star of Fawlty Towers and other well-known comedy shows, has spoken of his pain following his divorces. The actor and writer has been married and divorced three times, his first marriage being to Connie Booth.

They married in 1968 and remained together for 10 years, during which time they wrote the first series of Fawlty Towers together. After their divorce in 1978, they collaborated on the second series of Fawlty Towers which was a huge hit with British audiences, and still is today while now attracting a much wider audience. Cleese admits that his divorce from Connie Booth left him devastated for a couple of years, with the pair remaining close friends to this day. His second wife was Barbara Trentham who he married in 1981 and later divorced in 1990.

In 2008, Cleese embarked yet again on the road to divorce, this time from third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger who was awarded a huge divorce settlement of around $18.7 million. Cleese set out to write and perform his sell out ‘Alimony Tour’, which he famously says is paying his divorce settlement. Although Cleese has enjoyed the tour, he says he prefers writing material. In an interview for the latest issue of Reader’s Digest, he said:

“It’s the first time I’ve been on my own stage, and I like the immediacy of it. If you don’t get the laugh tonight, you can change the joke and try again the next night.”

Although he would rather be writing, he says he has to perform as it pays more money.

Pupils at Hampstead School in Camden, North London are to study the transcripts of the messages left on the answer phone of Andrew Sachs, highly respected star of one of Britain’s most loved comedy shows, Fawlty Towers. The actor and his wife Melody had been informed of the school’s intention to use the tapes in English exams for pupils in Year 10. The couple have called for the removal of the tapes from the school.

During the broadcast of a BBC Radio 2 show, Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand left obscene messages on the answer phone of Andrew Sachs, who played Manuel in the British comedy, referring to Sach’s granddaughter Georgina Baillie. Ross shouted that Brand had slept with Georgina, while Brand boasted of having sex with her.

A parent complained when the transcript was used during a mock English exam recently, while pupils originally believed it was a joke. The head teacher, Jacques Szemalikowski defended the use of the tapes, comparing the vulgarity to Shakespeare. He said:

“The unit is all about how people react to language and the limits of freedom of expression and this was a very famous snippet. It’s all about interpretation. It was a controlled assessment.”

The pupils also watched an episode of Newsnight, which discussed the scandal. Sachsgate was also used by WJEC, the Welsh examinations body to ‘discuss freedom of speech and what constitutes offensive language’.

Andrew Sachs has also appeared in Coronation Street in addition to playing the role of Manuel, the loveable Spanish waiter in Fawlty Towers.

Whilst being interviewed by Christian O’Connell on the Absolute Radio show, John Cleese referred to comedy as being in an “unhealthy place” as the creators of comedy and TV broadcasters are afraid to offend. When asked whether it was harder for comedians and writers of comedy shows to create comedy as people seem to be offended more easily, Cleese said that he thought it was ‘unhealthy’.

The star of Fawlty Towers and Monty Python was talking about comedy while promoting his DVD which features his recent Alimony Tour 2011. Cleese points out that if 95 percent of an audience are laughing but five percent are ‘offended’, stopping the comedy would be unfair on the 95 percent who are having fun. He also states that he doesn’t want broadcasting standards to be determined by ‘the most sensitive and neurotic people in the population.’

During the interview, Cleese discussed his three marriages and his financial situation. According to Cleese, he is still on good terms with his first wife, Connie Booth who he talks to constantly and loved. They wrote the two series of Fawlty Towers together, the second being written after they divorced. He sometimes speaks to his second wife, Barbara who lives in Chicago. His third wife Alyce Faye apparently said that if they separated they wouldn’t speak again, which Cleese appears to be content with.

John Cleese is currently working with his daughter, Camilla on the musical production of A Fish Called Wanda.
